Friday 56: Tolkien, Anyone?

The Friday 56 is a weekly booking meme courtesy of the nice folks at Freda’s Voice. I’ve been wanting to add it as a just-for-fun feature here for awhile, and since I’m about to start my Tolkien series back up at Part Time Monster, this seems a good week to start. 🙂

Rules:Friday 56
*Grab a book, any book.
*Turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader
(If you have to improvise, that’s ok.)
*Find any sentence, (or few, just don’t spoil it)
*Post it.
*Add your (url) post to the Linky. Add the post url, not your blog url.
*It’s that simple.

From The Hobbit:

They came on unexpected valleys, narrow with deep sides, that opened suddenly at their feet, and they looked down surprised to see trees below them and running water at the bottom. There were gullies that they could almost leap over, but very deep waterfalls in them. There were dark ravines that one could neither jump nor climb into. There were bogs, some of them green pleasant places to look at, with flowers growing bright and tall, but a pony that walked there with a pack on its back would never have come out again.

    • I was lucky — had them read to me when I was old enough to follow, but too young to read them myself. He is good at descriptive writing. I think the pony at the end really makes this passage sparkle.

    • I agree, and I must do some stop-bys of my own once I check in with something else I have going on. I looked at a couple when I added it to the linky, but haven’t had time to bop around and leave comments.

    • It IS a fun meme! I’ve got the quotes stashed away for a couple of months at this point — did that before I even started. But I might have to do a run of kid-oriented ones at some point.

    • Thanks very much! And yes, an awesome one to start with. I have been wanting to join in for a while, but held off until I can do it for a few weeks and actually do some visits.

And let me just say. Most comments I ever got from joining a linkup for the first time. I am impressed by the visiting I am seeing.
