Weekend Coffee Share: In Which I am Behind on Everything

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you this was one of those weeks where I actually wrote my coffee post while I was drinking my coffee on Saturday morning. I had a crazy-busy week at work and I’ve been trying to get to bed a little earlier than normal this week, because I started the week fairly exhausted. It’s been all I can do to keep up with the blog threads, and I haven’t done the best with that. If I didn’t have a big bunch of fabulous contributors for Sourcerer, many of whom schedule their own posts and answer their own threads, I’d have been sunk these last couple of weeks.

I’m also getting ready to move from an apartment in a not-so-good neighborhood to a house in the country, so I’ve had to spend some time adjusting the household budget and doing things like gather up appliances. I’m excited to be moving soon — we’ve outgrown the apartment and we really need a yard — but the moving itself is a pain. And it will be expensive.

I’d tell you I haven’t visited as many new blogs for the A to Z Challenge as I’d hoped to visit at this point, and I’m planning to spend a lot of my time this weekend catching up on that.  A to Z has been awesome this year — good for Sourcerer’s daily traffic, good for engagement, and good for bringing all the contributors and collaborators I work with together. I feel as though I’m not getting as much out of it as I could be, though, and that’s because I’ve not done enough visiting.

Other things here and there have unexpectely taken odd bits of my time.

Earlier in the spring, when our friends Holly and David of Comparative Geeks announced that they’re having their first child soon, and went out for guest posts to get them through May and June, Diana and I agreed to write several for them, on the same work of fiction. I’ve promised them a minimum of three posts and up to six if I can swing it. I’ve got the first three drafted, and I realized last week I needed to re-read the books I am writing about before I could write the other three. So I’ve been powering through a certain Neil Gaiman comics series this week, and I just finished it up last night.

A Facebook group that I loved, and shared blog links in almost every day, went away this week. I spent most of an evening asking around and figuring out what happened. I still don’t really know, but that group seems to be gone — at least it’s now secret and I, along with a lot of people I know have been removed. So I’m sharing my links in Once Upon A Blog now, and encouraging my friends who are in the same boat as I am with that other group to join me there.

1000speakLizzi1000 Voices Speaking for Compassion is getting ready to post again. The linkup goes live on Sunday/Monday. The optional theme for this month is Nurturing. I’m not writing for the linkup, but I am hosting it. I’ve spent some time this week discussing various ways of making the communication for that group more effective and encouraging participation.

All this hasn’t left much time to do anything else except communicate with Sourcerer contributors and answer blog threads. I’m even behind on that. But on the positive side, I’ve come home every day this week to find 30 or more Facebook notifications and 50 or more Twitter notifications. You wouldn’t know it just from looking at the number of likes on my personal timeline, but this networking thing is working. Time to admit that I’ve got more network than I can keep up with on a daily basis — and that is a good thing to admit to oneself.

I’m glad I started using Buffer when I did.

Then I’d tell you I hope you have a marvelous weekend, and it’s time for me to get to work. Keep writing and keep blogging!

-Don’t forget to share your link with #WeekendCoffeeShare on Twitter, and add it to the linkup at Part Time Monster.

  1. 🙂 yay for the new living arraignments.

That thing with that FB group is, to put it bluntly it blows. But so is life, I joined Once Upon a blog and will try to check out some blogs that post there.

As for 1000Speak I hope I can squeeze in a post tomorrow, since it is Sunday and I got nothing scheduled for the A to Z.

    • I’ve been in Once Upon almost from the beginning and am acquainted with the owner/primary admin and a lot of the members. So I definitely have an interest in building it.

I joined both those groups at the same time, and had been sharing in the other one because it was so much bigger and I really only have time to share links as status updates in one group.

Link-sharing groups are important, because it allows you to give your links one more share, and because if you have a lot of friends in the group, and they are also sharing links, you can like one anothers’ links and have conversations on the thread, and that keeps you affinity scores up so you don’t fall out of one anothers’ newsfeeds as easily.

I’m hoping a lot of the people who were removed from the bigger group will adopt Once Upon.

  2. I finally, finally got caught up on A-Z after that house guest and everything else last night and only have 10 blogs to read today. But now I also have a mountain of other stuff I put off for that final push. So this weekend is playing catch-up… but at least it’s raining, so I don’t feel compelled to be outside!

Good luck with your move. I have to start thinking about my transcontinental one very soon and it’s making me nervous. I came here with two suitcases and am leaving with an entire life.

Sorry your Facebook group went away. That’s too bad. 😦

I’m also reminded that I need to get my act together for ComparativeGeeks… I have a blog post I need to draft! I think for May? I don’t know which day in May, though, haha.

  3. Thanks for the coffee, I’m soooooo behind on A-to-Z commenting. I was a member of that FB group. No idea what happened. It was nice day here. Will post a picture in my coffee share when I get caught up. Have a great weekend. Buffer is AWESOME, try adding IF (formally IFTTT) to help automate keeping your buffer full.

  4. I got the update that it went secret, then that same evening I went to share a post, it was missing. I thought I was just deleted, because well, I’m not that much of a seasoned blogger and maybe my posts were getting annoying. Oh well I thought. But I admit I’m glad to see I’m not alone in the surprise catagory. I share a lot of my posts to another fb group of mainly women, but I also like to spread my posts to other groups as well. I did get a notice somewhere about the Once Upon a Blog group, but have had a busy night/day/night so still catching up.
I hope your move goes smoothly, and that it doesn’t end up costing as much as you’re anticipating. But I can only imagine.
The blog traffic is good, I feel I’ve been paying way too close attention to my numbers lately, although they are still small, but increasing steadily, I think I’m thinking too much about them. I’ve been hearing a lot about Buffer and the IF (IFTTT) but I’m completely clueless. So I think I’m spending my Sunday getting comfortable with them, and catching up with A to Z.
Hope you have a great weekend. And thanks as always for the coffee 🙂 Paula

    • Hey. I’ve got gotten into IFTT yet. Saving that one for once April is done. I’m loving Buffer, though. It’s keeping me online while I am at work every day.

I am not sure whether that group was made secret and purged, or whether the guy just deleted the thing. At this point, it doesn’t really matter. I’ll not be re-joining it if it resurfaces, and will leave it if I am added back by anyone else (I’ve told one of the moderators who was also removed that, and she’s understanding of the decision. Also, she’s a member of Once Upon).

      • My thought on learning about them today, went right out the window lol. But I plan on looking into them further probably after A to Z is over. I joined in the Once Upon group today, Good to see you over there. I’m not sure of the other group, and at this point like you say, I wont be joining it again. Thanks again for the coffee! Have a great week!

        • You too! My sense is that IFTT is worth looking into, but not worth putting yourself out to master. Is a powerful and fairly easy app though, I think.

  5. Thank you for reminding me that #1000 speak is tomorrow. I’ll try to get my post written today. Hope the move is going well. I’ve not participated in blog groups on Facebook before, (not really sure what the etiquette is) but have asked to join Once upon a blog and hope to learn from there. Have a great weekend, and cheers for the tea!

  6. I am also behind on everything, but I fell as though I’m finally beginning to be able to play catch up.

It’s been a very busy first quarter of the year.

And also, can’t wait to see the new place!

  7. When my daughter was around age two she used to say ‘you can only do what you can do’…makes perfect sense! You are so much more productive than most of us, by far!
Good luck with your new home 🙂

    • I say that a lot. “We can only do what we can do, and that is ALL we can do.”

I am a fairly productive blogger, I’ll give you that. It’s difficult when things take me a way and put me behind schedule. I always have the biggest plans I can possibly execute, and I am always scaling back based on contingencies.

One thing blogging has taught me is to not let the scaling back affect my self-esteem — not to view it as a failure.
