Feminist Friday: Feminism is a Queer Issue

Another fine Feminist Friday post. This summer run has been awesome, and we don’t have many weeks of it left. I’ll get the schedule updated with links this weekend.

Hannah Reads Books

We’ve been doing these Feminist Friday discussions for a while now. I’ve noticed commenters, on our posts and on feminist articles in general, often disagree with the need for feminism because they don’t want to single out one issue, they prefer to focus on “equality for everyone.” Sometimes this is just a dismissing tactic, other times it’s an honest preference. Either way, being feminist doesn’t mean I can’t be other things at the same time!

Everyone should be equal, sure, but not everyone is treated equally, and it’s important to point out which groups are disadvantaged and discuss ways to fix that. For concrete progress to be made, we have to move beyond ideology and start talking specifics. That doesn’t have to be a reductive or exclusionary process, though. Focusing on women’s issues also helps men, for instance, and women’s issues gay rights are human rightsinteract with other identifiers like race and class and…

Weekend Music: No Doubt with Pink

I so love YouTube 🙂 This is a little different than my normal selections, but it left me with a grin on my face. The energy is palpable.

I’m covering all my bases this week to try and persuade as many people as possible to read and comment on the Feminist Friday post at Things Matter. It’s Hannah’s first go with the hosting, and she’s been blogging about strong female characters in various media all week. Do give it a look 🙂 We’ve got three more weeks of these coming, then we’re taking the week of Halloween off. After that, I’m probably doing a wrap-up post at Part Time Monster on Nov. 7 and we’re going to start planning for next year. Blog traffic tanks between Thanksgiving and New Year (at least ours does), and late fall is busy for a lot of the people who are involved with these. So if you want to show support for this project before we wrap up the 2014 version, you should do it in the next month.

I’ve done my best to get Sourcerer back on track this week. We’ll have a Doctor Who review from Will there tomorrow, a social media post from me on Sunday, and plenty of our usual fare next week.

I’ll have a coffee post here tomorrow, and I’ll be around on the social media all day. @Sourcererblog on Twitter is a good place to find me 🙂

Happy weekend, everyone!
